Innovation! Trail-blazing! Disruption!
Innovation is the new black. Everyone’s doing it. But not particularly well.
When companies see their sales drop, they don't act - they react... Usually in one of two ways:
Incremental innovation:
a low risk, low cost venture to improve an existing product or experience.
This is a great option if you want to try to desperately cling to existing customers and have zero hope of getting any new customers.
This is kind of a half-arsed effort where the company isn’t really going ‘all-in’ or exploring the real problems they’re trying to solve.
Disruptive innovation:
a high risk, high cost mission into the abyss of the unknown.
This is perfect for those that do want to go all-in on the next big “out of the box” idea to become a “trail-blazer” (and potentially flat broke).
This is generally a good way to waste a bunch of money and have a really unique product that nobody actually wants.
There is however, another way. One that won’t leave you lonely without customers and crying in the corner.
This is the 3rd way of innovation
- developed by David RobertsonIn (MIT Sloan Senior Lecturer), the author of ‘The Power of Little Ideas’.
The 3rd way is a customer focussed approach to innovation that is low risk, high reward, expediting strategic growth in a changing landscape.
